Looking for winter snow games and snow activities that you can enjoy with kids?

Instead of hibernating in the house, watching TV, and playing video games… why not relieve the winder blahs by getting outside with your kids?

Snowball fight!... The perfect winter afternoon of family fun in the snow!

You’ll be able to enjoy the beauty of the season and have some fun with your kids at the same time.

Last year, my grandsons and I built 2 snow houses. It was a lot of fun. We spent the entire day playing in the snow.

The best part was that the temperatures stayed cold for several weeks and the boys and their friends had a lot of fun playing war games. They would form teams and try to capture the other team’s fort.

This year, they needed no inspiration from me — they made snow forts on their own with their friends!

Here are several fun snow activities you can enjoy with kids in the winter…

#1 – Make Snow Art

Coloring the snow - painting snow and a snowman.

Creating colorful snow is something that will appeal to kids of all ages.

You can do this by making snow sculptures, or by making a snow painting.

Here’s how to make water color snow paint:

  • Start with several water bottles with sprayers (from the dollar store).
  • Fill each bottle with water and add a few drops of food coloring.
  • Replace the top, and shake well.
  • Dress in layers of warm clothing and head outdoors.
  • Once outside, use a shovel to make an area of firmly packed snow approximately 4 feet by 6 feet wide. This is your “canvas.”

From there, use your imagination…

To make an abstract snow painting, spray several different colors over your snow canvas.

Or, you could make a more traditional piece of art — such as a landscape of flowers.

Another idea is to make a snowman — but instead of dressing it with actual clothes from your house, paint clothes right on your snowman!

You could also make a snow rainbow by spraying the colored water in an arc on the snow canvas. With another color, make a second arc next to the first one. Continue in this manner, allowing the kids to overlap colors to make secondary colors. (For example, try spraying red over yellow to make orange.)

#2 – Build A Backyard Skating Rink

If you’re lucky enough to have a natural depression in your backyard, let the sprinkler run all night to create a backyard skating rink!

If not, you’ll need plastic, plywood, and other materials to build a backyard skating rink.

Skating is a lot of fun and a backyard rink will keep your kids close to home.

Be aware that snow activities like these will also draw a lot of neighborhood kids to your property!

#3 – Play Snow Games

A fun winter game - snow bowling!

#4 – Go Tobogganing

Kids tobogganing down a popular sledding hill.

Tobogganing with kids is a lot of fun. The entire family will enjoy this winter activity.

All you need for a great day of tobogganing is snow, a steep hill, and either a toboggan or a sled.

You can toboggan on a nearby hill by pulling the toboggan to the location or you can transport the toboggan to a popular sledding hill.

Remember, you will need to wax your toboggan periodically to keep it in good condition. Toboggans that are properly waxed will zoom down the hill as fast as lightning.

Kids will love snow activities like this — especially if tobogganing with other kids their age. You can even host a tobogganing party!
